FAQ
Your Questions Answered
- The AAPA Provider Directory brought to you by the AAPA Division on Practice in collaboration with the Asian American Psychological Association. The aim of our directory is to connect Asians and/or Asian Americans to culturally aware providers who are prepared to meet your needs.
- Providers in this directory have background and interest working with individuals who are ethnically Asian and/or Asian American. We understand that culturally-informed care expands past ethnicity and intersects with many other aspects of who you are.
- This Provider Directory can assist clients in locating a provider that may best serve their needs. The DoP and AAPA do not verify the licenses or credentials of the providers. In addition, DoP and AAPA do not refer, recommend or assign clients to specific providers.
FAQs for Clients
- On the main Search page, you can use the many search functions to find a provider that meets your needs. For example, you can search for a provider that speaks your preferred language, that accepts your health insurance plan, and is experienced in providing treatment in your desired area(s) of focus.
- You can also search based on location or search specifically for providers who are “Accepting New Clients.”
- Two of the biggest factors in predicting treatment efficacy are trust and fit. You can read the provider’s “Practice Description” section to learn more about their background and experience to determine potential fit.
- It’s key that you feel safe, validated, and heard in the counseling space. It’s also okay to want a counselor who is explicitly an advocate or an ally for the Asian and/or Asian American community.
- It is your responsibility to confirm whether or not your chosen provider is a good fit, presents accurate information, and is appropriately credentialed.
It depends on who you ask, but studies have shown that finding commonalities and shared identities with your service provider is helpful in building trust and rapport, which in turn is very helpful in psychotherapy.
Therapists who offer sliding scales base the rate on your income. This makes it possible to access therapy even if you don’t have insurance (or they don’t accept your insurance) and you can’t afford their advertised rate.
